It is helpful to understand that not everyone called a client is a client.

According to Graybeal (2001), knowing who you are meeting with can significantly change both the experience and the outcome of the assessment process. For instance, perceiving someone as a target completely changes the socially constructed meaning of the interaction as well as the expectations that come with it.

Oh, how I wish I could carry all this beauty into the next season
but winter is coming.

How I wish I didn’t have to shed my leaves,
but winter is coming.

The weather will be harsh,
and I won’t have the strength to feed them all.
If I try, I may lose myself in the process.

So, here’s what I’ll do
I’ll let my leaves fall,
so I can survive the winter.

Because I know,
if I can stand through this test,
I will bloom again
with new leaves and flowers when spring returns.

So, fall my beauties… fall.
Let go, so I can grow.

Key Lesson:

There are times we must release the old to make space for the new.

What are you willing to let go of to embrace your next season or the New YOU?

Don’t lose yourself holding on to things
that are meant to fall away.

It’s Okay to start over!

When the Mind Plays Tricks: Understanding, Not Judging https://turningpagex.com/when-the-mind-plays-tricks-understanding-not-judging/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 04:22:44 +0000 https://turningpagex.com/?p=2186 He described a young man living with schizophrenia who suddenly struck his psychiatrist during a session. In his book Assessing, Diagnosing and Treating Mental Health Disorders, Taylor (2015) shared a striking account:

Violence may also happen if the hallucination alters the way someone else is perceived.

He described a young man living with schizophrenia who suddenly struck his psychiatrist during a session. Later, the young man explained that, in his mind, the psychiatrist’s face had transformed into that of a devil. In that moment, he wasn’t attacking his doctor — he was defending himself from what his brain told him was danger.

This story is a sobering reminder that mental illness can distort perception and reality itself. A brain affected by schizophrenia can make the familiar seem threatening, turning care into confusion, and people into imagined enemies.

Behind such actions are not “bad” people — but individuals whose minds are at war with themselves.

As a community, we must respond not with fear or judgment, but with understanding, trauma-informed care, and access to consistent treatment.
We need awareness, empathy, and early intervention — because many living with schizophrenia can lead stable, meaningful lives with the right support.

Let’s keep speaking up about mental health — not just for awareness, but for compassion, policy change, and safety for all.

🕊 Understanding saves lives. Stigma destroys them.

The Luxury of Obliviousness in the Workplace; and Why We Must Name It. https://turningpagex.com/the-luxury-of-obliviousness-in-the-workplace-and-why-we-must-name-it/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 02:42:30 +0000 https://turningpagex.com/?p=2061 For many BIPOC employees, we walk into rooms and must constantly read the air, deciding how much of ourselves is safe to bring.

In his work, Johnson (2006) describes “the luxury of obliviousness”; the privilege of moving through life without having to think much about race, gender, or systemic inequality.

For many BIPOC employees, this “luxury” doesn’t exist.
We walk into rooms and must constantly read the air, deciding how much of ourselves is safe to bring.

We constantly self-monitor:
🔸 Rewriting emails to sound “less direct
🔸 Working twice as hard just to be seen as “competent
🔸 Smiling through micro-aggressions so we don’t seem “too sensitive

Meanwhile, others move through the same systems without ever noticing these invisible burdens—because they don’t have to.
They move through the same spaces with the ease of being assumed worthy, neutral, or qualified—without scrutiny or second-guessing.

🎯 It’s not about assigning blame; it’s about awareness.
If we want truly inclusive workplaces, we need to name the dynamics that invisibly shape how people feel, show up, and are treated.

✅ This is why anti-oppressive policies matter.
✅ This is why leadership must go beyond statements and listen to lived experiences.
✅ Let’s make space for uncomfortable truths.

BIPOC professionals in positions of power or privilege also need to reflect on how this luxury shows up in our lives.

💬 Have you witnessed or experienced the luxury of obliviousness at work?

How can we move from awareness to action in creating equitable workplaces for all?

Dr. Sunera Thobani’s concept of Exalted Subjects explores how, for centuries, Europeans positioned themselves as the standard of humanity—rational, civilized, and capable—while casting others as “less than.” This colonial legacy didn’t end with history books—it walks with us into boardrooms, offices, and team meetings.

In many workplaces today, Black and Brown employees are still seen through a distorted lens. Our ideas are met with skepticism. Our contributions are overlooked. Our questions remain unanswered and ignored. Our potential is constantly questioned. Promotions come slowly, if at all—because somewhere, unconsciously or not, we’re still not seen as “fit” for leadership.

It’s not just about glass ceilings—it’s about invisible assumptions baked into systems that decide whose voice matters and whose doesn’t.

🧩 This is why anti-racism work in the workplace is not optional. Equity audits, mentorship, pay transparency, and meaningful inclusion practices must go beyond performative gestures.

We belong. We bring value. We are not afterthoughts.
Let’s challenge the exaltation of a few at the expense of many.

I still remember 2023, sitting in class and trying to focus on the lecture, but in the back of my mind, all I could hear was:

🎶 “Baby Shark, doo doo doo doo doo doo…”

🎶 “Five little monkeys jumping on the bed…”

Not quite the academic soundtrack I was expecting.

But songs that

Reminded me of home.

Reminded me of my kids.

I missed the routines — going for walks, bedtime stories.

I missed the chaos.

I missed the joy.

But funny enough… those songs, those memories — they kept me going.

Amid deadlines, reading overload, and mental fatigue, it was the songs in my memory that kept me grounded.

Those invisible moments of connection reminded me:

I’m doing this for them.

I’m doing this for us.

To every parent who’s juggling school, work, and home life — I see you.

It’s not easy. Some days can be incredibly lonely and tough.

But your love, your sacrifices, your silent strength — they’re shaping something beautiful.

I constantly remind myself of this, and I hope you do too:

You are not behind; You are building.

Keep going.

Why Supporting Men’s Mental Health Matters https://turningpagex.com/why-supporting-mens-mental-health-matters/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 04:30:30 +0000 https://turningpagex.com/?p=2025 Studies have shown that men, particularly Black men, often struggle to identify and articulate their emotional experiences.

]]>

I woke up today, and my husband has been very quiet and moody. This is not typical for him. I asked him what was wrong, but he replied, ‘I’m okay.’” – – A wife, noticing the silence that says more than words.

This is not just a mood.
It’s often a silent cry for help that even he may not fully understand.
Most men were socialized to suppress their emotions, rather than express them.
To solve problems, not sit with pain.
To endure, not explore.

Studies have shown that men, particularly Black men, often struggle to identify and articulate their emotional experiences. This is sometimes called “alexithymia” — the difficulty in recognizing or verbalizing one’s own feelings (Levant et al., 2009).
Research also shows that men are more likely to present irritability, withdrawal, or anger rather than typical symptoms like sadness when experiencing depression (Rice et al., 2013).

So when a man says, “I’m okay,”
He may really be saying:
“I don’t know what’s wrong.”
“I don’t have the words.”
“I’ve never been taught how to talk about this.”
Or: “I don’t want to burden you.”

To partners, family, and friends, your gentleness matters.
Sometimes it’s not about fixing it. It’s about making it safe enough for him to feel.

And to the men who are struggling in silence:
You are not weak for feeling lost.
You are human.
You are allowed to pause and ask yourself:
“What do I need right now?”
Because emotional literacy isn’t given; it’s a skill. We must unlearn silence to relearn safety.

Let’s stop mistaking silence for strength.
Healing begins when men are given permission and language to express their feelings.

Burnout is not simply about feeling tired. https://turningpagex.com/burnout-is-not-simply-about-feeling-tired/ Sun, 06 Jul 2025 02:02:27 +0000 https://turningpagex.com/?p=2021 When your job, life, or circumstances keep you in a constant state of depletion, your body will seek relief wherever it can find it.

Sometimes, it hides behind that third cup of coffee…
That glass (or bottle) of wine after work…
That late-night scrolling binge with snacks you barely tasted.
Or the pills you’re relying on just to function.

We may not always recognize it, but when stress becomes chronic and support is limited, many of us turn to things that numb, stimulate, or distract, just to get through the day.

🧠 Increased caffeine to stay awake.
🍷 Alcohol to quiet the racing thoughts.
💊 Medication (prescribed or not) to get by.
🍔 Overeating or emotionally eating, not out of hunger, but exhaustion.
These are not signs of weakness.
They are indicators of burnout.

⚠ When your job, your life, or your circumstances keep you in a constant state of depletion, your body will look for relief wherever it can find it.
But here’s the thing: coping is not the same as healing.
What we need is not more guilt, but more compassion, support, and spaces where we can discuss this without shame. You are not alone.
And it’s okay to ask for help.

Let’s stop glorifying hustle and normalize honest conversations about what burnout really looks like.

Burnout wears many faces.
Some go unnoticed. Others scream.
And most are misunderstood.

It’s not just about being tired.
It’s the creeping sense of numbness when you no longer care about the work you once loved.
It’s the rise in irritability or anger, when even simple tasks or conversations feel too much.
It’s that sinking feeling of “I’m not good enough” — even when you’re trying your best.

And underneath it all, the heaviness of depression and anxiety grows quietly, making everything harder to manage — including your self-worth.

This is burnout.
And no, it doesn’t mean you’re weak or lazy.
It means you’ve been carrying too much, too long, without enough support.

💭 If this sounds familiar, know that your feelings are valid.
You are not broken, you’re burned out. And you deserve care.

Let’s build workplaces where rest isn’t earned through exhaustion. Where people come first, not just performance.
Where empathy is not a nice-to-have — it’s a leadership standard.

📌 Let’s talk about it.
📌 Let’s check in on each other.
📌 Let’s challenge toxic norms, and replace them with healing ones.

You are more than what you produce.
Your mental health matters.

Burnout doesn’t always come from doing too much.
Sometimes, it comes from going nowhere.
🚧 No growth.
🚫 No advancement.
❌ No mentorship.
⛔ No path forward.

When you’re stuck in the same role with no support or vision for the future, even the most passionate work starts to feel heavy.
The result?
💭 Low motivation
📉 Loss of purpose
🔥 Burnout masked as “boredom” or “laziness”

But it’s not laziness—it’s stagnation.
And stagnation is exhausting.
🌱 People don’t just want jobs—they want journeys.
They want to grow, to learn, to be mentored, and to be seen as someone with potential—not just productivity.
I’m grateful to the mentors I have had in my academic and career journey.

If your team looks disengaged, ask yourself:
Have I created a culture of growth—or a culture of survival?
Because meaningful growth is one of the most effective tools for preventing burnout.
