There are four main types of blood groupings that each person falls under. These are the A, B, AB and O. In cases of blood transfusion, health personnel use these blood types to determine which category one can receive from or donate to.

A receives from A
B receives from B
AB receives from AB ( universal recipient)
O receives from O (universal donor)
A+ receives from A+, A-, O+ and O-
A– receives from A- and O-
B+ receives from B+,B-, O+ and O-
B- receives from B- and O-
AB+ receives from AB+, AB-, O+ O-
AB- receives from AB- and O-
O+ receives from O+ and O-
O- receives from only O-
